Join us for our annual trip to Hazel Creek to experience some of God’s most beautiful creation as we share in fellowship, get a little exercise, and paddle/ride across the lake in the boat of your choice and then hiking around the remote town of Proctor NC.
Hazel Creek’s serene beauty belies its rich history as Proctor, which a century ago was the largest town along the Little Tennessee River. Proctor grew, prospered and died with the mining and lumber industries that briefly flourished in these mountains.

Meet at
Bryson City UMC at 7 am and grab a quick breakfast at Bojangles across the street and then drive to Cable Cove boat ramp off of Hwy 28 near the Fontana Dam on Fontana Lake.
Cable Cove boat ramp, at 8:30 am. Here are some simple directions to Cable Cove – From Bryson City take US/74 West to NC 28 N (right turn towards Robbinsville). Continue on approximately 20 miles (8.2 past the 143 turnoff). Turn right onto SR 1287 (Cable Cove). Go 1.5 miles to the end of the road.
As in the past, the group will paddle canoes, kayaks and paddleboards on a 3-mile journey across Lake Fontana from Cable Cove to the inlet for Hazel Creek. For those that prefer a motorized trip, David Outlaw will be taking his pontoon boat.
Once the group has arrived at the inlet of Hazel Creek, the group has a few options including:
- a short historical hike through the town of Proctor
- fishing on Hazel Creek (must have a NC fishing license)
- an extended hike up Hazel Creek
- a casual stroll up the creek taking in more beauty of God’s creation
Bring your own lunch, water and snacks for the boat ride and comfortable shoes for hiking around proctor. Sunscreen is a must and bug repellent is recommended. You should also bring your own specialized toys such as paddling, fishing and photography gear.
If you have any questions about the trip, need to borrow a kayak, or join in with someone in a canoe, call the church office at 828-488-2680 so we can work something out.
